Hershey takes it Outside!

A month without a post or concept? Wow! Sorry everyone for the lack of content. I've just been crazy busy with everything! But my finals are done with and now I've just got some down time to relax and enjoy this beautiful Colorado snow! Unfortunately still no hockey though. Let's get to the concept!

Hershey Bears Outdoor Classic Concept
Hershey's new look is absolutely gorgeous! I love their logos and always love a brown color scheme. I really thought that their Outdoor Classic jersey would be a cream colored jersey but they rolled this out instead. Here's my idea. A cream jerseys (considering it's actually in their color plate!) with chocolate brown accents and equipment. I wanted to keep the whole design very simplistic, clean, and classic. Not much more to say, but I think the Bears would look really great in some uni's like these. I'd love to hear your feedback!

Thanks for stopping by and Happy Holidays!!!

Less Buffaloes, More Sabres!

Another quick concept today. Am I the only one sick of the Sabres using buffaloes as their mascot? It's their city name not their team name! Here's my solution.

Buffalo Sabres
We've all seen this logo mashup before. I did my own, similar version putting more emphasis on the sabres and less on the buffalo. I also added the crossed swords to the arm stripes and created a more modern look. I'll let the concept do the talking for itself but I'd love to hear your feedback!

Nashville Predators

Hello readers! Long time no post. Been busy with class, work, sports and life! I hope you're all doing well.

CBA talks are set to resume today. Hopefully these pricks (sorry I'm not their biggest fans right now) can nail out a deal so we can get back to what's most important... HOCKEY! I've been coping with the lockout through College and CHL hockey. I've been to a few Cutthroats games and go to CC Tigers games quite often. Most recently, the CC vs. DU series which is always insane!

I apologize for the lack of posts lately. Classes for me have been getting crazy and when I'm not doing that I'm working or out doing stuff. I want to sit down more often and make more concepts but whenever I get some free time I either have a lack of interest or ideas.  I did, however, just get a new macbook! I love it but I'm still getting use to the mac after switching from PC and also getting the hang of Adobe CS6.

Enough talk, lets get to the concept!

Nashville Predators
This is a sort of mixing of eras. I was never a fan of the Preds original jerseys until I saw a few concepts, one by Steven G. and the other on CCSL. Both concepts did a great job of putting that unique template into gold and blue. This concept is largely inspired by, and similar to Steven's.  I wanted to use that unique arm striping in a more simplistic way while still showing off that awesome gold/yellow jersey! I also made a nod to the previous alternate jersey by placing a sublimated checkerboard pattern on the hems and cuffs. The rest is pretty self explanatory but I'd love to know what y'all thought!

Thanks for stopping by and I'd like to wish my American readers a Happy Thanksgiving this Thursday!

San Jose Sharks Re-Design

Hello everyone! I hope all is doing well and everyone on the East coast is staying safe from Hurricane Sandy.  Let's get right to the concept.

San Jose Sharks
I've always been a big fan of all of San Jose's uniforms. Their colors and logos are great and they've always had pretty nice designs. My absolute favorites though, have always been their jerseys from 1998-2007. Basically my main purpose was to replicate those in a new, unique way. If you haven't noticed I'm a big fan of traditional jersey designs so this design took me a little out of my comfort zone. However I left the traditional look to the third jersey which is basically an updated version of the Sharks current third jersey. This took a lot of different designs, and redesigns but ultimately, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. What do you think?

An Orange Ducks Third Jersey?

Hello everyone. Just a quick concept today.

Anaheim Ducks

I've always been a fan of bright colored jerseys (yellow, orange, etc.) and thought the Ducks would look cool in an orange jersey. This design is actually based off of the San Francisco Bulls sock design. I just really liked how the gold, white and black stripes looked on orange so I through this together just to get a whole jersey idea. It's quite simple but I think it would be a neat design.

Minnesota Wild Update (Away Added)

Hello everyone. I hope you're all having a swell weekend and finding all the hockey you can to keep yo'selves entertained! A lot of people lately have been telling me that I need to make a whole Wild set off of my original concept. Well... here's an update to the original concept as well as an away jersey. Ironically as I was creating the road jersey, HJC announced their Wild Re-Design comp. so I guess I'm killing two burds with one stone.

Minnesota Wild

Pretty straight forward here. I turned the basic original design into an away version. I chose to use a cream base because I wanted to eliminate white, COMPLETELY from the Wild's color scheme and I just think the cream and green compliment each other very well. At the same time I wanted to make the design unique and I believe the yokes, striping, colors, font do just that. I was going to make a third jersey but I think both their current home and alternate would make a good one so I just decided leave it a home/away set. What do you think? Would you like to see Parise and Suter (hopefully soon!) making their Minnesota debuts in threads like these?

Blackhawks Updates

Happy Saturday everyone. I've got a few updates to yesterdays concepts. First one by me.

Chicago Blackhawks
Scott M.. recommended that I return the TV numbers to their usual position and have the captain patch match the numbers. I also made the cuffs smaller and a few other tiny changes recommended from some CCSL board members. I think I like this version better. What do you think?

Now an update from Tyler Gross...

Chicago Blackhawks (Tyler G.)
Tyler G. made a few small changes and replaced the primary logo. I have to say... I love this concept now! Great work, Tyler!

That's all for now. Thanks for stopping by!

Chicago Blackhawks: In Need of a Third Jersey!

Hello readers, get excited, it's the weekend! Colorado is getting it's first snow if the season so I decided to spend the night in and get some work done as well as a new concept!

When you talk about teams needing a new third jersey, the Blackhawks are always in the conversation. They're always a popular topic for concepts as well. Often a new twist on their Winter Classic jersey, a solid retro uni, or something fresh. My concept pokes at a little bit of everything.

Chicago Blackhawks
The main base of the jersey design is based on the Hawks 2000's black third jersey. Basically a black version of the home/away set. I started off by replacing the classic head logo with the retro circle logo and went from there. I then added the tomahawk alternate logo on top of the arm stripes. This was largely inspired from their 1950's uniforms. I took the concept even further (as well as further outside my comfort zone) and placed the TV numbers on the shoulders, a move I'm still unsure about. The rest is pretty straight forward but I am happy with how it turned out. What do you think?

Tyler Gross also has a few Blackhawks alternate concepts for us.

Chicago Blackhawks (Tyler G.)
At first I wasn't a huge fan of this concept. But... it's really grown on me! The colors, shoulder patches, numbers look great! The only thing that's kind of throwing me off is the primary logo. It does look good here, I just wonder how one of the retro logos would look on here?

 Chicago Blackhawks (Tyler G.)
Another black Hawks jersey. (Get it?) Ha anyways this one has grown on me as well. It's clean, classic, and effective. I wouldn't have a problem if Chicago suited up in these. Tremendous execution as well!

Tyler and I would both love to hear your comments so leave your feedback below. Have a great weekend and thanks for stopping by, the Art of Hockey!

Ottawa Senators 2.0

Hello everyone, I have anew, old concept to share.

Ottawa Senators
A while back I did a Sens concept but looking back I hate it. This is my updated version with some significant changes. The biggest one being the change to black which, as I hear, is what most Ottawa fans want. I also added a third jersey which is basically a red version of their current third. I'm going to let the concept do the rest of the talking but let me know what you think in the comments section below. Thanks!

Play NHL 13 with Me!

Happy Sunday everyone. Unfortunately, no new concept. But I have been working on multiple concepts that  I hope to finish soon. However, I recently picked up NHL 13 for PS3 and it has been taking up most of my free time. I just wanted to let you guys know my username so we could play a game sometime if you wanted! Don't worry, you'll probably win, I'm not that good!

Here is my username, it's for Playstation Network: avsfan_09. (I know, it's lame. I made it like 5 years ago!)

That's all for now, folks. Have a good weekend!

Minnesota Wild

Hello again, everyone. I was able to get a little more down time and I definitely wasn't going to use it to watch football! I was able to get another concept finished, though. I noticed the popular concept trend seems to be Minnesota Wild. Everyday on HJC there seems to be more and more. So here's my take at a Wild jersey.

Minnesota Wild
The Minnesota Wild need two things...More green...and a good re-design. The Wild, in my opinion have the best logo in the league...and jerseys...not even close. Their three jerseys look nothing alike . They all have completely separate designs, colors, and logos. How can you call that a jersey set? The home jersey is a decent design but the players look like Christmas elves when on the ice. The away jersey is a lazy, Reebok cookie cutter jersey and while the third jersey is beautiful...it needs to stay a third jersey. This concept is aimed to fix those problems. The striping is based off of the third jersey and I wanted to use all four colors in the primary logo. The rest is pretty straight forward. How do you feel about this design?

Thanks for stopping by and let me know what you think in the comments section below!

Pittsburgh Penguins

Hello all! I hope you've been good lately. Tonight I have a few Penguins concepts for you from myself and Tyler G. Lets get right to them!
_________________________________________________________________________________

Pittsburgh Penguins
I have to be completely honest with you. I love vegas gold. I just think it looks great with black and white. Very modern and classy as well. HOWEVER... if a city were to have official colors, black and yellow (athletic gold) would be Pittsburgh's. That color scheme represents Pittsburgh's sports identity and the Penguins need to rejoin the club. This is aimed to do just that by combining and modernizing the Lemieux (strong use of athletic gold) era and pre-edge era (angled side stripes) while adding a new, fresh twist to their identity. If you're wondering about the socks, they're based off of Anaheim's alternate socks where the orange comes down from under the pants. The rest of the concept is pretty straight forward. What do you think?

Pittsburgh Penguins (Tyler G.)
Tyler takes the Penguins even farther back and bases this set off of their original jerseys and 2011 Winter Classic jersey. I like these a lot and a vintage white version would be sweet. However I think the main striping color on the road jersey should be dark blue with poweder blue used as the thinner stripes. The same goes with the NOB and numbers. Then again... I'm kind of starting to like the light blue on vintage white. Great execution though, as usual from Tyler.

LA Kings, not Burger King!

Hello everyone, I hope you're having a swell weekend. I was not only ab;e to get some much needed free time today but I felt like working on a concept and small post! I want to thank everyone for sending in concepts and emails, I just can't find the time right now to respond, or post the concepts. Sorry! I will soon though... I promise. My schedule will definitely clear up in October which means I will be able to devote more time to concepts and the site. Let's get to today's concept...my entry for the HJC "Make the Burger King Logo Look Better" (or something like that) contest.

Los Angeles Kings
I've always been a big fan of the Burger King logo but the logo just (obviously) didn't have the jersey to back it up. HJC's newest competition addresses just that and here is my proposal. I wanted to keep it classic and clean while still keeping it unique to Los Angeles and Kings tradition. I also used the design as a way to reincorporate purple back into the color scheme. That included using it as the base color and changing it to royal purple, which I think represents "Kings" better. The shoulder patch is meant to combine the Gretzky era with the current ear but I was unable to get the colors and format exactly as I wanted. Overall, I'm really happy with how it turned out and I wouldn't mind seeing the Kings add something like this to their current set. As always feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend!

Expansion Contest: The Winner is...

Hello everyone and a Happy Sunday to you all! Sorry I haven't posted here in a while I've been caught up things. Every day I think to myself, "I want/need to make some new concepts or write a new blog post." but when I actually find the time to do it, sitting on my computer is the last thing I want to do. A lot of you have sent me emails with concepts, requests, etc. and I have gotten your emails, I just haven't had the time to respond. I will soon enough!

I also want to apologize for taking such a long time to get the results of the Expansion Contest but I have the winner for you today!

I would also like to take a moment to thank everyone for participating in this contest. Whether that meant submitting entries, voting, or just stopping by to take a look, we appreciate it!

Now time for the big news... The 2012 NHL Expansion Contest winner is....

Winnipeg Jets Third Jersey Option

Hello everyone and Happy Labor Day! I hope you all had an excellent 3 day weekend and for some, a good end to the summer. (Mine ended 3 weeks ago!) I know I promised a big post this weekend but I just couldn't muster up the time to get one done. I do however have time to do a small post a Winnipeg Jets third jersey option.

Also be sure to check the previous post and vote for the final expansion entries!
_________________________________________________________________________________

Winnipeg Jets
I like to consider this a mix between the RCAF jerseys, the current Jets jerseys, and the old blue Thrashers jersey. This started out as an all navy blue concept until I realized it looked just like a Blue Jackets jersey. But I changed the base color to blue and added some elements from their current uniform set. It was just missing something. I tried stripes, I tried various designs but nothing was working. Then I remembered a concept that used the military wings (in the alternate logo) on arm stripes. I tried using those and they worked beautifully! Afterwards I searched and searched for the concept I was thinking of and finally found it. It was a home/away concept by Steven Grant (SG-94). My concept actually turned out to be very similar to his, totally by accident. Thanks for the inspiration, Steven. I didn't mean to copy you! What do you think?

Round 2 Results: Final Vote!

Hello everyone, I (finally) have the round two results! Let's get right to them.
_________________________________________________________________________________

USA Champion....

Ryan Haslett!

Ryan's Seattle Metros concept shut out Scott D.'s Hartford concept 5-0!

Canada champion...

Dave Campbell!

This one was tied until the very end when Dave broke ahead defeating my Hamilton concept 3-2. Congrats Dave!
_________________________________________________________________________________

Ryan and David now go head to head in the finals and need your vote! The vote ends Wednesday, September 5 at Midnight. The winner will receive an entire post featuring some of their concepts!

Also I've had some down time this weekend to work on concepts and just relax. That means I'll (hopefully) get a long overdue, big post written and published! Maybe even two. Have a good weekend, everyone!

A Desert Makeover: Phoenix Coyotes

Hello again everyone! Sorry for another late night post but this is about all I can do for now. Tonight I have a few Coyotes concepts; one from me and one from Tyler G. Also if you didn't see earlier, the Round 1 votes for the Expansion Contest were  announced and Round 2 voting has begun. Lastly I'm going to try (no promises) to get a big post up. That would include concepts, lots of concepts, news, updates, etc. But ;et's get to tonight's' concepts.

Phoenix Coyotes

The Coyotes current look isn't terrible but it could definitely use some work. What I don't like about Phoenix's jerseys is that they went from very unique, creative jerseys to a completely bland design. What I wanted to do here was create another unique, desert look without it looking too gaudy. I used the Aztec motif but kept it clean and not too crazy. What do you think? Any C&C is appreciated!

Phoenix Coyotes (Tyler G.)
Rather than creating a new design for the Yotes, Tyler updates the current one. Finally someone added the hem stripes! I though I was the only one who got irritated by their absence? The rest of the jersey looks good and would be an excellent update for the Coyotes. My favorite part has to be the stripes on the collar. However I don't like the nickname on the helmet. If I had to fix one thing though, I would change all of the white to tan. Just my opinion though.

Thanks for reading, everyone. Have an excellent weekend!

Round 1 Results: Round 2 Voting Begins!

Hello everyone! Once again I want to apologize for the lack of posts and updates recently. I've been incredibly busy and haven't had much free time. Today (only 3 days late) I have the results of Round 1 of the Expansion contest! I would also like to thank everyone that participated or voted in the contest.
Note: If you do not see your name listed that unfortunately means you didn't receive any  votes. Thanks for participating, though!

Last Expansion Entries: Voting Begins!

Hello everyone, it's been a little while! First off I want to apologize for the lack of updates, posts and email replies lately. I've gotten super busy over the last week or so and I don't think that will change anytime soon. Luckily I finally found enough time to sit down and write up this post. This one will just be dedicated to getting the voting process started for the expansion contest but on Sunday or Monday I should have a regular post up including some concepts and news.
_________________________________________________________________________________

In the end we ended up with 17 total entries from 9 designers. Wow! That's not a ton but it's a lot more than I expected. Thank you to everyone who participated! Here is the final entry two entries. NB14 sent in his a while ago but I forgot to post it. Sorry, NB14! If I forgot to post anyone else's or get them in the Photobucket album just let me know.

Also, I've added a prize for the contest! Nothing big but I wanted to reward and thank the winner somehow. I will dedicate an entire post to the winner and their designs. The post can feature as many designs as you want and I can include write ups on each of them as well. It's not much but it's better than nothing.

Hamilton (Steven G.)

Quebec (NB14)

_________________________________________________________________________________

For the first round of voting you will need to vote for your favorite concept from each of the four cities. Only vote for one concept from each city and you can vote for up to two (2) of your own entries. You can send your votes to jncox9@gmail.com by Tuesday August 21 at 12PM mtn. time.

Contributor Concepts and Expansion Entries

Hello again everyone. Sorry this is another late post but I've had a busy weekend. I just got back from Denver a little while ago and then got caught up in the closing ceremonies. Anyways.. today I've got both concepts and expansion entries from Casey R., David C. and Tyler G.

I also wanted to let everyone know that starting tomorrow my schedule will get extremely busy. I still plan on making concepts and running the site but my time to do so will decrease rapidly. I'll try to keep the blog updated as soon as possible and in my little free time I'll work on some concepts!

I have a strange request for you guys. I was at Best Buy a few days ago looking at laptops and saw this awesome wallpaper on an HP computer. It sounds odd but when I see a design I like I have to get it for wallpaper, inspiration, etc. Luckily I carry a small USB with my car keys but upon trying to put it in the computer to save the background a Best Buy employee stopped me informing me that's frowned upon. Who knew? Anyways it was just a background that I believe comes on all (newer) HP's. If I remember correctly it was a light blue background that had tree's and red, yellow and blue hills and was in a cool, kind of distressed graphic design style. (Sorry for the crappy description.) You all must think I'm crazy but I'd love to get this wallpaper! If you know what I'm talking about or have the wallpaper that'd be great if you could email it to me at jncox9@gmail.com.

Lastly, the fourth round of the TOHD wrapped up but the shoulder patch vote ended in a tie. I've posted the tie breaker on the top right of the page and you can vote until Tuesday evening.

REMINDER: All Expansion Entries are due at the end of the day Wednesday.

Quebec (Dave C.)

Hartford (Casey R.)

Quebec (Tyler G.)

Ottawa Senators (Dave C.)
This is really cool. The stripes are really think and show off the design which works out really well here. I also love that alternate logo with the gold trim. The font is kind of strange but it definitely says "Senators" to me. Or something Greek? Nevertheless, solid work here, Dave.

Ottawa Senators (Dave C.)
I LOVE this! Dave got the striping perfect and he obviously knows which logo needs to be used. I personally prefer a red jersey but it seems that all Sens fans want black to be the base color again. If you transferred this onto the Reebok template and added shoulder patches this would be the perfect look for the Senators. Not much more to say here. Great work, Dave.

I'm really starting to love these yellow/gold Panthers jerseys! This is a great start by Casey. The striping looks great and would be a good match to the home and away jerseys. I think that the red cuffs and blue trim on the hem need to be removed though.  I would also go with (always) a solid colored helmet and in this case, all red pants. My last nitpick is that the socks have no stripes. Other than that I think this would make a great jersey! I would be interested to see some white in between the stripes to match that great logo. That's just my opinion though. Good work Casey and thanks for sending this in!

Buffalo Sabres (Tyler G.)
I absolutely loved the Sabres anniversary jerseys and if I came across one in a store I would probably buy it.   Tyler did an excellent job combining the anniversary jerseys and the current jerseys. I would take these over the current or past Sabres jerseys any day!

Dallas Stars (Tyler G.)
Another great set by Tyler. The yokes and stripes are cool. I love the way he used the colors. These are (obviously) a huge improvement over the current uniforms and wouldn't mind too see these in action. No complaints here. Two solid concepts Tyler.

Bringing Black and Silver Back to Tampa Bay

Hello Everyone, it's late here in Colorado so I'm going to make it quick tonight. First off I have a Tampa Bay Lightning concept set.

Tampa Bay Lightning
I'll be honest. I love the Lightning's current look! Its simple, clean and effective. But a lot of people have been calling on the return of black. In my opinion, if the Lightning's current (maybe past?) third jersey lost the nickname it would be a great jersey! That's what I tried to do here while also changing it up a bit. The biggest change is that from hem stripes to side stripes similar to those on the Ducks and Isles third jerseys. I created my own logo based off of the current primary and added more details and colors. It took a lot of variations but I'm glad with how it turned out. The alternate is just a modified version of the current alt. and to top everything off I included a sublimated wordmark on the bottom back of each jersey. I'm sorry for the sloppy, jibber-jabber description but I'm really tired. I would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this design!

Also stay tuned tomorrow for some concepts and expansion entries from Casey R. and David C. Goodnight everybody! Or goodmorning?

What I think the Denver Cutthroats will look like

Courtesy DenverCutthroats.com
This past year it was announced that Denver and the CHL would be receiving a new hockey team. I, living in Colorado, was obviously exited to get a new semi-pro hockey team to go watch. Before any announcements were made there were already tons of rumors about the Cutthroats name. For those who don't know, the Cutthroat is the state fish. I didn't mind it too much. I actually thought it sounded pretty badass. However unless it's a shark, not many fish are "badass." But I remained optimistic. Especially when I heard the Denver graphic design company, Adrenalin, was working with the Cutthroats. Adrenalin is the same company that designed the Avalanche logos and the current Coyotes brand among some other great designs such as the Colorado Mammoth. But the Cutthroats logo didn't measure up to the others. In my opinion it was actually a
terrific idea. A fish coming out of a stylized D with water and mountains coming out of the outlines. Very creative. The only problem is how it came out. It looks like amateur logo straight out of the 90s. And the colors, which are good, just don't seem to work within the logo. Maybe if the fish wasn't so bland this would look better? I was hoping the logo would come out something similar to Ryan Muraro's Seattle Sockeyes logo as seen on Puck Drawn. Even the colors are the same (for the most part) followed by some awesome jerseys. I actually predicted that the logo, or alternate logo, would be a Colorado "C" with a fish leaping out of the bottom end. I tried to render that but I couldn't create a fish that I liked. But I did create an alternate (on the right) similar to the primary meant to be portrayed as a "name in circle" logo. Currently the only logo and only logo/design that has been released has been the primary logo with a wordmark. I'm hoping to see an alternate but only time will tell if that happens.

Courtesy DenverCutthroats.com
On the Denver Cutthroats website there are various images, wallpapers. backgrounds, etc. that all use the same general design. They all have some basic stripes (from inside: teal/blue, white, red) with a green background. It got me thinking that these images maybe hinting at the upcoming Cutthroats uniforms. With that being said I did my best to render what I think we will all see Denver unveil before this October.

The jersey design is a combination of all those things. I decided to do a dark version based off of the images I found. I used the same striping from the wallpaper and used my alternate logo as a shoulder patch. I also decided to use teal/blue equipment. This isn't the best or most creative design but I think it's certainly possible. What do you guys think?
Courtesy DenverCutthroats.com

While I was gathering images for this post I came across this on the Cutthroats web page. It is a rendering of what Denver's mascot, Gill, will look like. I was less interested in the mascot and more interested in the jersey he is wearing. It's really basic and downright boring in my opinion. Pretty out dated as well. What is it with the Cutthroats and the 1990's design connection? Although I do like the wordmark, it looks awful on the jersey. It also makes the logo way too small. I'm sure this is just a basic jersey rendering for mascot presentation purposes but it got me thinking... what if this is the jersey? I sure hope not. I know they're just a CHL team but they can do better than this. My favorite part of the mascot has to be the arms and legs! I didn't know fish had those? Haha kidding.

I know not a lot of you want to read about the Denver Cutthroats but I really appreciate you stopping by, hearing me rant and checking out my newest design. Come back soon.
